AUTHORS WANTED
We are looking for dependable authors. Lone Wolf Enterprises, Ltd. is not a literary agency. There are no reading fees. Exclusive contracts for all of your work are not required. We are not concerned if you are not a polished, published author. If you have the credentials, experience, and knowledge needed to teach others through books, you might be just what we are looking for. Our editorial team can help with the actual writing process, if needed. The key is having something of value to share with others, such as your life experience, your work experience, or just a darn good idea.
Lone Wolf caters to major publishers, such as McGraw-Hill. We find qualified authors, market their work, supervise the manuscript preparation, and then perform all of the prepublication press work and composition. We are a one-stop shopping center for serious publishers who want complete, professional publishing packages.
Roger Woodson, the president of Lone Wolf, is an internationally-known author of more than 60 books. He has written for Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Contemporary Books, and many other publishing firms. You can review a full list of his work on our Woodson's Writing page. Woodson knows how to write for niche markets and how to break down the barriers that new authors face with major publishing houses.
Many publishers don't want to work with agents. This contradicts what you may read about the industry but it's the truth. The vast majority of Woodson's personal sales were made without the aid of an agent. Senior editors, editors-in-chief and publishers have shared their preferences with Woodson. Many publishers are unwilling to pay the high advances that agents demand. This means unagented authors have an edge.
Just as many publishers won't deal with agents, many agents will not deal with unpublished authors. Agents typically earn their money as a percentage—usually between 15-20 percent of the amount paid to the author. (We are talking about legitimate agencies, not the ones that charge would-be authors fees for everything from telephone calls to reading fees.) If an agent can place a true-crime book with an advance against royalties of $25,000 or a book on woodworking with an advance of $2,500, which book do you think the agent is going to work hardest to sell? Do the math.
Quite frankly, it's just not very profitable to act as a literary agent for books that receive modest advances and questionable sales. But these books sometimes hit it big and make a lot of money. Still, it makes no sense for an agent to spend the same amount of time to place a book that pulls an advance of $3,000 when the same amount of time invested might net a sale with an advance of $40,000. This creates an industry problem, but it is one that Lone Wolf can solve.
Lone Wolf can't change the rules of publishing, but it can put a new slant on them—and it has! It would not be financially feasible for Lone Wolf to act as a literary agency for small-advance books any more than it would for any other agency. But since Lone Wolf offers complete publishing packages, the deal changes. We don't make our living from a percentage of your advance or royalties. Instead, we rely on the prepress and composition work that is part of our complete professional publishing packages.
When we offer an acquiring editor a total package for a printer-ready book, it's a win-win deal for everyone involved. Authors get a sale to a major publishing house. The publisher gets a trouble-free, cost-effective book to publish quickly. Lone Wolf is paid for services rendered and preserves its value to the publishing industry. Everyone wins and is happy. We call this system our Publishing Plus service, and it is being well received by many big-name publishers.
To make our publishing packages viable, we need authors who are dedicated to writing about what they know and believe in. Credentials are very important, as is experience in the field being written about. It's always nice to find people who can write well, but the editorial team at Lone Wolf can refine rough writing, so long as the meat of the matter is clearly explained. You don't have to be a published author or a grammar expert to write for the markets that we sell to. If you can convey your feelings, ideas, and experience clearly, we can dress the words up for you—that's part of what we do.
Lone Wolf never charges a potential author reading fees, membership fees or any other type of entry fee. We work only with projects that we believe in and profit only when they are sold. If you want to pay for editorial consulting, you can, but it's offered free of charge in most cases. We will help you build a salable proposal without charging you for the advice. Unless you desire extensive time with one of our consultants, there will be no charge for our help in creating a proposal that we believe can be sold. Lone Wolf does offer a number of editorial services on a fee basis, such as copyediting, layout, indexing, and so forth, but this is not aimed, typically, at our authors.
The strength of Lone Wolf lies within niche markets. These markets can include books about real estate, business, gardening, woodworking, photography, cooking, crafts, construction, remodeling, investments, travel, and so on. We are not looking for the next great American novel. The publishers with whom we work are looking for books on everyday topics that will appeal to consumers of all types. If you are a stamp collector, you may have a book inside of you. Someone with special knowledge of scuba diving might have a great book to offer a publisher.
We will consider any topic that is tightly defined. If we feel it's a salable project, we will offer you an option contract on the idea, so that we can market it to our publishers. Your advance against royalties and your royalty schedule will be negotiated once a publisher makes an offer for your proposal. Lone Wolf will consider any topic that can be pinpointed to a specific audience. We are not interested in mainstream books of a general nature. Fiction and poetry do not fit our profile. The how-to market is our cornerstone of success.
If you are interested in working with us, you can contact us by phone, mail, e-mail, or fax. We will be happy to answer your questions about our publishing program. Assuming that we decide that we will do business together, you will need to provide us with some basic information. The first step is sending us a bio on yourself that describes your areas of expertise. If you already have a book idea, share it with us and we will help you to develop it, assuming that it fits our publishing profile. Maybe you don't have an idea for a book but know that you are a qualified person who would like to write a book. That's fine. Tell us about yourself and we will suggest areas on which to concentrate your ideas.
The success of Lone Wolf Enterprises, Ltd. depends on a stable of competent professionals and experts to produce books. Simply put, we need quality authors to maximize our business. You don't need a college degree to be an author. If you are an expert in composting, you can probably sell a book deal on the subject. Books are written on countless subjects by average people. However, selling the books can take forever. With our publishing contacts and the extended services that we offer publishers, we can often shorten the sales time.
We would love to add you to our list of available authors. Who knows? The next conversation that we have with an acquiring editor could be about your book idea. Check out our web site. Look over the book reviews. Request our letters of reference from publishers, such as McGraw-Hill. Investigate all of your options. Remember, you don't have to sign a full exclusive contract with us. If we like a proposal, we will option it on a job-by-job basis. You are free to market your other work on your own. We feel that we have created an unbeatable system for authors and publishers alike. If you agree with us, contact us with your interest or questions. Thank you for your interest in Lone Wolf Enterprises, Ltd.
